Thousands of students participate in the Faculty of Informatics’ international summer courses

Students of the University of Debrecen's Faculty of Informatics (IK) who participated in courses sponsored by Microsoft and NVIDIA have gained state-of-the-art IT knowledge and competitive certification. Students from the Faculty of Computer Science at the University of Debrecen and the Vishwakarma Institute of Computer Science in India attended the online courses, with more than 4,000 students participating in the joint work, which mainly focused on data science, artificial intelligence and deep learning.

The Faculty of Informatics of the University of Debrecen has for many years been in close contact with major global computing companies such as Microsoft and NVIDIA. Through this cooperation, joint professional courses are regularly held, where teachers and students can acquire knowledge essential for their professional development in the fields of artificial intelligence, computer science, data science, graphics and simulation, networking, among others.
In August, the faculty launched online courses in partnership with Microsoft and NVIDIA. The eight-hour NVIDIA Fundamentals of Deep Learning course, coordinated by Balázs Harangi, deputy head of the IK Data Science and Visualization Department, taught participants how to learn, optimize and deploy neural networks using the latest deep learning tools and frameworks by accessing GPU-accelerated servers in the cloud.

On Microsoft's special courses, students were able to gain industry-relevant knowledge in line with the faculty's training approach. The sixteen-hour AZ-900 Microsoft Azure Fundamentals course, led by Ádám Tóth, Adjunct Professor at the Department of Information Systems and Networks, University of Debrecen, Faculty of Informatics, and Tamás Bérczes, Associate Dean for Economics and External Relations, introduced students to the basics of Microsoft's cloud technology and services, among other things.

- Due to cooperation with Microsoft, NVIDIA and the Faculty of Informatics' International Industrial Examination Centre, participants were able to obtain globally recognized industry certificates, which greatly help students to find a job and acquire up-to-date knowledge. By completing the courses, students can become marketable not only at home but also internationally. The practice-based education provided by the faculty is also reinforced by the contacts with these large companies, which are sufficiently intensive throughout the entire training period. The courses have been successful, and we have been able to deal effectively with the order of magnitude increase in student interest from the Indian partner, which is a step up in dimension and will pose new challenges for the faculty in the future," said András Hajdu, Dean of the Faculty of Informatics.

Between 150 and 200 students from the IC registered for both courses, and more than 4000 students from the Indian partner university, Vishwakarma Institute of Information Technology, attended the courses. The AZ-900 course had a total enrolment of 3100 and the NVIDIA course had around 1500 due to resource constraints. In response to the high interest from the Indian partner, the Faculty of Computer Science will be organizing more NVIDIA courses in the near future and the Indian institute is planning Amazon courses for the autumn semester.

Building on the success of the summer school-style courses, IK and the Indian Institute are committed to continue the courses with local students and academics, and have a common goal to further strengthen research collaborations, thus raising the relationship between the two institutions to a high level.
