Professional Dialogue for Greener Cities

The University of Debrecen (UD) and the Politehnica University of Timișoara launched a new project a few months ago with the aim of building a modern, cross-border environmental monitoring system. The researchers are using special bioindicators such as honey and tree sap to measure urban air pollution. The first findings of the ENVIREG project were discussed at a joint workshop in Debrecen on Tuesday.

The Romanian-Hungarian project, launched last November, held a hybrid professional day yesterday, bringing together scientific research and decision-making. Approximately 120 participants were in attendance at the University of Debrecen (UD) and the Politehnica University of Timișoara, as well as online for the developments of the programme called “Innovative approaches for complex monitoring and assessment of environmental impacts caused by rapid industrialization in the Hungarian-Romanian cross-border communities”.

The event was opened on behalf of the Debrecen hosts by László Juhász, Director of the Institute of Chemistry of the Faculty of Science and Technology of UD, who underscored the urgency of the project in the context of the region’s dynamic industrial expansion.

The professional programme is concerned with how to preserve a sustainable urban environment. The researchers do not base their work on the data of the usual measuring stations, but on the signals of the living world.

The main objective of the workshop was to bring the research results closer to local decision-makers and future professionals. The students participating in the event were able to learn first-hand about the tools that help in the precise determination of environmental burden, using sampling protocols and analytical methods.

The ENVIREG project, funded by the Interreg VI-A Romania-Hungary Programme, is slated to continue until 2027. The next phase will feature additional community outreach and educational study tours for students to enhance academic exchange between the institutions while improving regional environmental safety.
