Hungarian-Indian agricultural cooperation at the University of Debrecen

The Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and Environmental Management at the University of Debrecen has recently signed an agreement with the international training organization Pronix Learning on cooperation in education, support for student mobility, the arrangement of joint mutual internships, and a partnership to apply for international grants. In the framework of this collaboration, the first thirty students from India have already arrived at the Faculty of Agriculture in order to participate in a two-week, practice-oriented international training program.

-The Indian institute called Pronix Learning offers agricultural training programs of varying length at locations in the United States, the United Arab Emirates, Israel, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and the Netherlands for young professionals and university students with an interest in Indian agriculture. We are very pleased that they have chosen our institution in Hungary for this pioneering initiative. We have tailored our short-term training program to the needs of our visiting students so that they should gain as comprehensive an experience as possible about Hungarian agriculture. The reason for this is that climate change, drought-tolerant farming, water-saving technologies and genetic improvements represent areas on which we must focus more and more in the future. As regards the COVID-19 pandemic, it also highlighted the vital importance of self-sufficiency concerning food supplies. I do sincerely believe that sharing our best practices can facilitate the development of the agricultural sectors in our countries- said László Stündl, Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Science and Environmental Management, following the ceremonial signing of the agreement.

Pronix Learning has been India’s leading institution in the field of international professional experience programs ever since 2013.

- In my country, it used to be the case that only those who could prove that they came from a farming family were allowed to attend agricultural universities. Although this rule has been abolished by now, the majority of students still continue to come to institutions of higher education in agriculture from such a background. As a leading provider of opportunities to take part in international agricultural training programs held in the United States, Europe and Australia, our organization offers practice-oriented and skills development programs enabling young professionals to test and apply their knowledge in an international setting first, before they return to their home countries to establish and develop their own farms. After all, the future of farming is in what we call smart farming- said Nitin Thakoor, the Director of Pronix Learning.

Director Thakoor highlighted that the objective of his organization continues to be the training of successful agricultural entrepreneurs whom they can assist in establishing their own businesses, including issues such as brand building and the legal and administrative aspects of articles of incorporation. He believes that the key to success lies not in working harder, but rather in working smarter. He is fully convinced that innovation, automation, and IT solutions are all necessary for the future competitiveness and profitability of agriculture.

István Komlósi, Head of the Doctoral School of Animal Science at UD, underlined that those who participate in this international program would not only gain theoretical knowledge during the training course but would also be able to gain hands-on experience through laboratory exercises and experiments, field trips and farm visits, while learning about the faculty’s diverse and wide-ranging activities.

- This is an intensive international agricultural training program that showcases the most state-of-the-art European solutions in sustainable and precision agriculture while aligning them with the Indian agricultural context. Among other things, these students will be exposed to a range of topics including precision agriculture, animal husbandry and feeding as well as genomic technologies, regenerative agriculture and crop rotation systems, biological and integrated pest management and plant protection, intensive fish farming and aquaponics, precision water management, drones and remote sensing in crop production, and even agricultural hackathons- said István Komlósi.

Upon signing the agreement, it was announced that the collaboration between Pronix Learning and the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Science and Environmental Management of UD would further strengthen the already existing professional ties between the Hungarian and Indian agricultural sectors. In addition, by facilitating the international exchange of agricultural expertise, this partnership may also open up new long-term training opportunities for students from India.

After the signing ceremony, Director Nitin Thakoor met with the instructors who participate in the training program, following which he paid a visit to the practical training sites, the laboratories and the teaching farm.
