Six faculties of UD have requested the prolongation of the current academic year. This opportunity was opted for mostly in the programs of medicine and health sciences and technology and natural sciences. The examination period are planned almost everywhere to be conducted in-person.

According to a government decree, the institutions of higher education may prolong the current semester if necessary, which may thus become longer than the preliminarily scheduled ten months. At the University of Debrecen, the individual faculties could issue a statement concerning their choice during the past one and a half weeks. Most of them did not consider any extension necessary because they believe they can complete the semester according to the original schedule.

Out of the fourteen faculties, altogether six decided to go for this solution in order to complete the semester without haste by making up for the practices and conducting the exams under proper circumstances. These are: Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Health, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Public Health, and Faculty of Science and Technology.

“The demand for the extension of the term was chiefly characteristic of the faculties where the programs are practice-oriented. Thus, it was the programs in medicine, engineering and science that applied for this possibility in order to be able to complete the practices. As at the end of the previous academic year, this choice will hopefully not cause any problems in the administration this year either. The students will get a chance to complete all the requirements and the instructors and professors will accept the extra load even during the summer months,” said   Annamária Pósánné Rácz, Director for Educational Affairs at the University of Debrecen.

The academic term ended in the middle of May, and the Rector of the University of Debrecen issued permission to the faculties to hold the final exams, professional practices, defenses and aptitude tests in person. Accordingly, the majority of the faculties will make the necessary arrangements to conduct these examinations and tests face to face.

In the upcoming months, more than 26 800 students will be taking exams at the University of Debrecen. According to the briefing issued by the Director for Educational Affairs, our institution will handle this period with maximum flexibility, which means that the students may choose between the in-person format and the online version of examinations.

In accordance with the request submitted by individual faculties, the 2020/2021 academic year at the University of Debrecen may last until the end of August instead of the beginning of July.
