Hans Christian Andersen's wonderful story of Ariel, the mermaid, has been rendered and seen on stage in a number of different adaptations over the past decades. Soon, oDEon Theater will also be presenting a musical version of this unforgettable tale. Casting for the English-language production started yesterday.
“We were very happy to see that there appeared a lot of international students, who are enrolled at the University of Debrecen, already at the first selection round. Altogether, they represented as many as fifteen countries, with Kenya, Egypt, Iran and Vietnam amongst them. Based on what we have seen so far, a female student from Sri Lanka seems to be the most likely candidate for the part of Ariel, but there will be two more auditions for singers and dancers held in February, so this is still an open competition. Nevertheless, it seems already certain that some of the actors and actresses who have been cast in our performances before will also appear on stage again, as this musical will be the fourth in a series presented by oDEon’s international troupe,” said oDEon stage manager Veronika Végh.
The most recent English-language production of “Aladdin” at the university’s theater was an enormous success, but both “The Lion King” and “Hair” had been received with a standing ovation when performed by international students at the University of Debrecen. “The Little Mermaid” is coming soon to follow suit at the end of April.
