Vaccination Has Started

On 26 December the first doses of the Pfizer-Biontech COVID-19 vaccine arrived at the University of Debrecen. Vaccination started. In the last days of December, 975 people were vaccinated.

On the second day of Christmas, the containers with the vaccines arrived at UD with police escort.

– The vaccine is stored at -75 degrees Celsius at the pharmacy of the Institute. Before use, the vaccine is dissolved. After that, it can be used for 6 hours – explained Gyula Buchholcz, chief pharmacist at UD, head of the Clinics Pharmacy to M1.

In the first round, the employees of the university set up four vaccination centres, two at the Clinical Centre, and two at the Kenézy Gyula Hospital. So far, out of the nearly 6,000 employees of UD, about 2,000 people have indicated their request for the vaccine. The first batch can be used to vaccinate 975 people. On 27 December 121 people were injected. Until the end of the year, all employees working at the Infection Centres, ER and IC units, and other healthcare professionals dealing with patients infected will be vaccinated. Then those who are exposed to a lesser extent will follow. Immunity is ensured by two injections with a 21-day interval between them.

István Várkonyi, director of the Infectology Clinic of UD, who was the first to be injected, told the media that setting a good example by doctors is important. He also said that everyone should take the vaccine as soon as possible, and added that different kinds of vaccines would be available in the months to come.

Experts emphasize that vaccination is the safest and most effective way of stopping the pandemic.
