U.S. - Hungarian Course Development

Students at the University of Debrecen (DE) will soon be able to learn about U.S. history through a new hybrid course. The program is being developed through a collaboration between faculty members of the English-American Institute at the Faculty of Humanities. UD, (BTK) and Earl Mulderink, a professor of history at Southern Utah University (SUU), under a cooperation agreement signed last year to promote educational and research projects.

The American professor, who specializes in teaching and researching American history and has decades of experience in developing online and hybrid courses, is visiting Debrecen for the first time, where he will spend five weeks at the university as part of the Fulbright Specialist program.

- The main purpose of Earl Mulderink’s visit is to develop a course that Hungarian and American students can take together, allowing them to acquire digital and intercultural skills in addition to the standard curriculum. Upon completion of this course, American students will gain a better understanding of the historical ties with our region, while students in Debrecen will be able to expand their knowledge of the subject firsthand. I hope that this collaboration and the course will not only expand knowledge in the future but also encourage student and faculty mobility, as well as further academic cooperation,” Balázs Venkovits, director of the English-American Institute at the University of Debrecen’s Faculty of Humanities- told the hirek.unideb.hu portal.

Professor Mulderink’s work in Debrecen will conclude on May 9. During this time, he will be working alongside colleagues from the North American Department of the Institute of English and American Studies.

- I have long been an advocate and practitioner of new educational and learning technologies; I currently fulfill my teaching duties from home through four online courses: History of the United States to 1877, African - American History since 1877, The Historian’s Craft, and Research Seminar. “Based on my decades of teaching experience, I believe that these forms of instruction—beyond the acquisition of knowledge—offer students the opportunity to develop their writing, communication, and analytical skills- said the professor.

Owing to the university-wide cooperation agreement signed with Southern Utah University last year, a student from Debrecen is already studying for a master’s degree in American Studies in the United States this academic year, and a student from the United States has also arrived and is currently pursuing studies at the Institute of Psychology at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Debrecen. Earl Mulderink was also pleased to report that during his stay here, he spoke with Ramsses Jimbo, a student at SUU, and met with Daniella Orsós, the exchange student from the University of Debrecen, in Cedar City, Utah.

According to plans, two students from the University of Debrecen will be able to study in the United States during the next academic year; under the agreement, they will be exempt from tuition fees and will also be eligible for support from the Pannonia Scholarship.
