However, the new arrivals are not only learning the Hungarian language but also exploring Hungarian cuisine, culture, and local attractions. Those who would like to discuss the Hungarian language, culture, or history in Hungarian or English can do so every Wednesday evening at the Társalgó with Director Péter Szaffkó.
The folklore program has enjoyed unbroken success for years; as part of it, students not only hear and see folk songs and dances, but also learn them while familiarizing themselves with a different region each week. The first week featured the Hajdúság region with its songs, dances, and stuffed cabbage; the second week, Somogy; the third, the Szatmár region with goulash soup and cabbage scones; and the fourth week will showcase songs and dances from Moldavia.
On Friday of the second weekend, a “beach party” was organized for the students: they ate lángos, just like at a real Hungarian beach, and showed up in funny beach outfits. During the evening, they tested their knowledge of Hungarian waters, rivers, and lakes in a “water-themed” quiz.
On the first weekend, interested participants had the chance to visit Sáránd, where they could see a real Hungarian farm, the Szeredás Porta. There, after cooking together and baking in the oven, they could try their hand at crafts, braid kalács (sweet bread), roll out snail-shaped pasta, and even feed the animals.
Participants in the second session will visit the open-air museum in Nyíregyháza next weekend, where they can take part in village games and make their own ointment at the local pharmacy.
