THE-ranking: DU preserving its position

Among Hungarian institutions of higher education the University of Debrecen has finished third on the most recent list of Times Higher Education World University Rankings. On the prestigious international list published Wednesday night UD was placed among the top 800-1000 category.

In this year’s ranking Times Higher Education (THE) examined 1396 institutions of higher education worldwide. Gaining a position in the top 800-1000 category this year, the University of Debrecen was also able to move from fifth last year to sharing third position in a tie with the Universities of Pécs and Szeged. UD has improved most in terms of the number of international students, moving to position 480 from last year’s 480.

-As a university with the highest number of foreign students the University of Debrecen finds it important that its international outlook should manifest itself in the ranking list, too. This year 2007 foreign students have been admitted to the English-speaking courses of the University, a ten percent increase over last year’s number, enabling us to further strengthen our position, Ákos Pintér, vice rector for general affairs of the University of Debrecen told hirek.unideb.hu in connection with the ranking published on Wednesday.

THE World University Rankings is the only global ranking table to compare research-intensive universities across all of their missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. It uses 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators to provide the most balanced and comprehensive comparison, trusted by students, academics, university leaders, industry and governments. The performance indicators are divided into five fields: teaching (learning environment); research (quantity, income, and good reputation); number of publications (influence of research published); industrial income (knowledge transfer), and international outlook ( employees, students and researchers).

The list is headed by the University of Oxford, followed by the California Institute of Technology and the University of Cambridge.

The full list can be accessed at the  webpage of THE, where the mlist of the Hungarian universities  can also be seen.
