A new skills development playroom opens at the Children’s Clinic

Thanks to the support of BMW Group’s Debrecen Plant, the Department of Pediatric Rehabilitation, Pediatric Psychology and Psychosomatic Unit at the University of Debrecen Clinical Center’s Pediatrics Clinic has been expanded with a new, modern skills development playroom. The new venue facilitates the recovery and development of children who undergo rehabilitation in a joyful and interactive environment.

Several superhero figures, toy cars, books and coloring books, gaming cards and even an activity wall have all been installed in the new skills development playroom of the Pediatric Rehabilitation, Pediatric Psychology and Psychosomatic Unit. In this calm and child-friendly environment, which has been carefully designed, playful activities facilitate the children’s recovery and development.

- This playroom is expected to make a significant contribution to the development of pediatric care at the Clinical Center. It will hopefully support the effective treatment and healing process of children in a number of areas, specifically by enhancing the effectiveness of rehabilitation processes. This recent investment conforms with the clinical system development in pediatrics over the past five years- said Professor Zoltán Szabó, President of the Clinical Center at the University of Debrecen.

The venue was set up in the loft of the building of the rehabilitation unit with the support of the BMW Group Plant in Debrecen.

- Our company maintains close cooperation with the university, and this partnership is of high importance to us. We attach great value to this partnership and are always pleased to seize whatever opportunity arises to work together for a good cause. We also receive a lot of benefits from the city of Debrecen, so it is only natural for us to return some of this support to the local community according to the best of our ability. We do believe that children are indeed the future, so every effort made on their behalf is the best possible investment. So, when we invest in children, we are actually building the future- said Hans-Peter Kemser, President and CEO of BMW Group Plant Debrecen.

According to clinical experts, play features as one of the most important tools in child rehabilitation, as it encourages development and learning as a matter of course. The new playroom also serves this purpose.

- After the morning developmental therapy sessions, we schedule the afternoon activities to take place in a relaxed, informal setting. As support for the rehabilitation process, we include story and art therapy, as well as animal-assisted programs. Now, these are complemented by the new skills development playroom. It is undoubtedly play that motivates children the most, while their fine and gross motor skills, logical thinking and combinatorial skills develop instinctively. This new space presents a great opportunity for us, as we can use it to further reinforce the results of physical therapy, special education sessions and other therapeutic elements in a playful way-said clinical specialist Ágnes Tóth.

Children with limited mobility would typically spend 3 to 4 weeks in the 15-bed clinical ward, which on average provides rehabilitation for approximately 230 patients annually.
