Last April, the Institute of History of the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Debrecen (UD BTK) and the Department of Military History of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń organized a joint conference in Debrecen, for the first time, with the title Modern History Symposium, aiming to initiate a long-standing practice. This year, the meeting was held in Poland, on 21 April.
- The professional collaboration between the historians of the two universities began more than ten years ago and has yielded joint publications, fostered personal contacts, and included participation in international conferences”, Róbert Barta, Director of the Institute of History of UD BTK, told the hirek.unideb.hu portal.
At the second Toruń-Debrecen Modern History Symposium, the presentations were given in English language by the academic staff of the Department of Military History of the host university and by Róbert Barta, Csaba Lévai and Katalin Schrek (online) from the Institute of History of UD BTK. The contributors also shared insights in a follow-up discussion.
The presentations covered, among other things, the impact of the American Revolution on Hungarian and Polish development, the Balkan policy of Austria–Hungary, the diary of a soldier who fought on the Eastern Front in the First World War, Polish visions of Poland after the Second World War, and Czechoslovak-Polish relations between the two world wars.
The scientific programme also provided an opportunity to discuss further collaboration and the deepening of existing relations with the Polish partners.
- As a result, we are pleased to host the symposium again in Debrecen, in the spring of 2027, where Hungarian and Polish PhD students will also have the opportunity to present their works- said Director Róbert Barta.
The trip of the Hungarian attendees was supported by the Scientific Fund (TUDA) of UD BTK.
