Orientation for foreign students at the Faculty of Economics

On Orientation Day, foreign students at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Debrecen had the opportunity to learn about Hungarian and Debrecen customs and culture on Wednesday. Presentations were given in English at the event, followed by informal discussions among the participants. Every year, more and more native Hungarian speakers study courses in English at the Faculty of Economics.

This academic year, 5,800 students enrolled at the Faculty of Economics (GTK) of the University of Debrecen (DE), of whom nearly 700 came from abroad. The latter are currently pursuing their studies in English in two bachelor's and two master's programs, as well as in doctoral programs. The Orientation Day, held at the beginning of each semester, serves to inform them. More than a hundred people participated in this year's event.

The program began with a presentation by László Erdey, Deputy Dean for International Affairs at DE GTK, about DE and its economics programs, followed by a talk by Troy Wiwczaroski, an associate professor at GTK who was born in the United States. Troy Wiwczaroski spoke to students about the characteristics of Hungarian culture that are necessary to know in order to live a frictionless and happy everyday life in Hungary.

-The rules of communication and customs are different here than on other continents. For example, we place greater emphasis on punctuality than in South America, for example. It was also discussed how students should address their teachers, how to write emails to them, what constitutes appropriate behavior during university lectures, and how to work together in a team. These are also necessary for foreigners to be able to integrate into a foreign culture without frustration. This is our way of helping them, explained László Erdey.

The program continued at the Kazánház on the Böszörményi út campus, where foreign GTK students and teachers got to know each other in a more informal setting, with a quiz show and an after-party, organized with the involvement of the Student Council and the International Student Council.

The vice dean responsible for international affairs at the Faculty of Economics also reported to hirek.unideb.hu that the proportion of Hungarian-speaking students pursuing their studies  in English has been steadily increasing at the faculty in recent years. There are currently 34 such students.

- Those who graduate in this way help foreigners to integrate. The experience they gain will certainly help them to work more easily in a multinational environment," added László Erdey.
