Partners from the United States at the University of Debrecen

The topic of opening new areas of partnership between the University of Debrecen and a number of institutions of higher education in the state of Indiana, the United States of America, was in the focus of discussions between Indiana Secretary of State Diego Morales and Rector Zoltán Szilvássy recently. A range if further topics at their meeting included new international cooperation channels used by our university as well as corporate relations cultivated by our institution.

It was during his previous visit to Debrecen last April that United States of America, was in the focus of discussions between Indiana Secretary Diego Morales had offered to assist the efforts of establishing partnerships between the University of Debrecen and institutions of higher education in the state of Indiana, with special attention to academic collaborations and student mobility programs. The recent meeting was supposed to review the progress made since then.


During the course of discussions, the most notable areas covered included the active corporate relations of the University of Debrecen, the development of the international student community at UD, and the system of courses currently offered in English. Rector Zoltán Szilvássy also elaborated on our latest research findings and results.


Secretary of State Diego Morales came to the meeting with his wife Sidonia Nicolae, Honorary State Consul of Hungary to Indiana, and Béla Kocsy, Specialist Diplomat for Agriculture and Environment at the Embassy of Hungary in Washington.


It was announced at the meeting that the State of Indiana would welcome additional students from the University of Debrecen in fields other than agriculture, medicine and pharmacy. A further expansion of the current partnership would be mutually beneficial and it would offer a number of new opportunities for students and researchers at UD.

Mr. Morales underlined that three of Indiana's forty institutions of higher education, Purdue University, the University of Notre Dame and Indiana University, are among the world's leading institutions of higher education. 


Béla Kocsy, Agricultural Attaché at Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade at the Embassy of Hungary in Washington, explained that the current aim would be to expand the active US relations of the University of Debrecen to other states and institutions in addition to its close partnership with the University of South Dakota and Purdue University.

The members of the American delegation also included Aurelia Skipwith Giacometto, Secretary of the Environment of the State of Louisiana and Honorary Citizen of the University of Debrecen, who participated in discussions with Endre Harsányi, Vice Rector for Sectoral Development, responsible for the development of agricultural and food sciences. 

Both Aurelia Skipwith Giacometto and Diego Morales attended the event named CPAC Hungary, where they also met the representatives of the University of Debrecen at the booth of our institution.
