Prestigious recognition for the Faculty of Pharmacy building

The new building of the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Debrecen has been awarded a prestigious architectural recognition at the international competition BIG SEE Opening Perspectives 2025 in the category Educational Buildings. The National Manufacturing, Research and Education Central Plant and Faculty Building was awarded first place for innovation, intelligent design, originality, environmental sensitivity, sustainability, cultural and social awareness and functionality.

The new headquarters of the previously scattered Faculty of Pharmacy (GYTK: Gyógyszerész-tudományi Kar) of the University of Debrecen (UD) was inaugurated last May in Tudományos, Technológiai és Innovációs Park [Science, Technology and Innovation Park], located next to Vezér utca. The 6,700-square-meter, HUF 12 billion National Manufacturing, Research and Education Central Plant and Faculty of Pharmacy was designed by lead architects László V. Monori, Tamás Tótszabó and Dávid Tóth of the company Pyxis Nautica Architects. In addition to teaching, the building can also be used for pharmaceutical technology research and production.

The building’s educational wing is a three-story structure with a “T” layout and a central corridor. On the ground floor, there are two lecture halls with a capacity of 100 people each, an atrium and administrative offices. The upper floors feature research and teaching laboratories, classrooms, a library, and a simulation facility. This wing is home to the Dean's Office of the Faculty of Pharmacy, several departments and the Healthcare Industry Institute.

The central plant in the building is used for both medicine and drug development, but also for health research. The laboratory has the potential for research, development, innovation and even manufacturing pharmaceuticals eligible for registration on the market.

- In this center, we are not only going to implement the university's own projects but also provide research and production facilities for our industrial partners joining the health industry cluster established by our institution, which is unique opportunity in Hungary – said Ildikó Bácskay, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Debrecen.

The open educational wing counterpoises the enclosed, box-like mass of the production unit. From an architectural perspective, the industrial part of the building resembles the surrounding anthracite-clad industrial halls, while the education wing is a more sophisticated building with lots of details to link it to the complex.

The new headquarters of the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Debrecen has been chosen the best in the category Educational Buildings in the BIG (Bio Intelligent Generation) SEE (South-East Europe) Opening Perspectives 2025 international architectural competition. The jury of architects adjudicated the projects on the basis of factors like innovation, intelligent design, originality, environmental sensitivity, sustainability, cultural and social awareness and functionality.
