A member of the Faculty of Humanities receives prestigious award

A faculty member from the Institute of Slavic Studies at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Debrecen has become the recipient of international professional recognition for his work as a literary translator. József Goretity was honored with the “Read Russia” (Читай Россию) award in the Contemporary Russian Literature category at the 9th International Congress of Literary Translators in Moscow between September 3 and 5, 2026.

For the past fifteen years, the congress has been one of the most significant international forums for literary translators, hosted by the Institute for Literary Translation with the support of the Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media of the Russian Federation. This year, the professional event was attended by over 180 literary translators, philologists, educators and publishers from 42 countries.

The “Read Russia” (Читай Россию) award was presented at the closing ceremony of the congress. This award is presented by the Institute for Literary Translation to recognize outstanding achievements in translation from the Russian language, a result of efforts that play an important part in introducing Russian literary masterpieces to international audiences and promoting the global discovery of new voices and talents.

This prestigious professional award was won by József Goretity in the category of Contemporary Russian Literature.
