The programmes were hosted in Ningbo, one of China's oldest and most important port cities, known for its rich history, prosperous economy and unique blend of ancient culture and modern industry. In recent years, Ningbo has launched a major effort to promote educational cooperation between China and the Central and Eastern European region, promoting as comprehensively as possible the possibility of building a demonstration zone for economic and trade cooperation between China and the countries of Central and Eastern Europe.
During the visit, the University of Debrecen took a prominent role in the 9th China (Ningbo) - Central and Eastern European Countries Educational Cooperation Forum. As one of the milestone projects of the opening event of the conference, the conceptual design of the Sino-Hungarian Academy of Traditional Medicine Silk Road Joint Research Centre was inaugurated.
Two cooperation agreements were also signed during the trip with Zhejiang Wanli University and Zhejiang Pharmaceutical University, establishing long-term scientific and educational partnerships.
Discussions with the leaders of Zhejiang Wanli University also covered student and faculty mobility, joint agro-technology and environmental management projects, the launch of a dual MSc course and the possibility of establishing a joint research infrastructure.
The delegation visited Zhejiang Pharmaceutical University, where opportunities for cooperation in the field of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) were outlined. Building on the production and pilot plants of the University of Debrecen, they discussed research into herbal medicines, the possibility of introducing Tai Chi as a sport, the launch of a summer university and visiting scholar programme, and joint PhD thesis management.
László Stündl, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Food Science and Environmental Management, also paid a professional visit to the Ninghai Institute of Aquaculture Research (NIMBSI), where he learned about research and development activities in fish farming, creating opportunities for further joint scientific initiatives.
The visit reinforced the strategic objectives of the University of Debrecen towards the Asian region and further expanded the scope of cross-border scientific and educational cooperation. The Chinese partners also showed a clear intention to deepen relations, and the parties plan to return to Debrecen in spring 2026 to prepare and launch joint programmes.
