Freshers’ Welcome Picnic for international students of law

The Faculty of Law and Political Sciences at the University of Debrecen welcomed its first-year international students with an outdoor picnic on Wednesday. The organizers of Welcome Day – Freshers’ Picnic sought to make sure that the participants should not only gain access to the curriculum required in order to obtain their degrees but they should also become acquainted with the faculty, Hungarian culture and customs, and the city of Debrecen in an informal setting.

Zsolt Hajnal, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law and Political Sciences (ÁJK) of the University of Debrecen (DE), said in connection with the program that he is proud that more and more students from abroad choose the faculty's courses every year, with the number of students just starting their studies approaching sixty. A particularly popular choice is the two-semester English-language European Law and International Business Law program, known as LLM, with nearly thirty students admitted this time. The general experience is that quite a few of those who complete the program also decide to remain at the faculty and join the doctoral school.

“Our Welcome Day – Freshers' Picnic is an event designed to give our international students a more relaxed and informal introduction to our faculty's programs, our Marton Géza Állam- és Jogtudományi Doktori Iskola [Géza Marton Doctoral School of Political Science and Law], the Student Self-Government and the Preator College of Advanced Studies, in one of the campus parks. We aim to make freshers as well as our senior international students feel welcomed so that they would understand how happy we are to have them here and that we are delighted that they have chosen to study with us,” said Zsolt Hajnal.

The informal afternoon program included a talk titled Puskás, paprika, pálinka vagy még több? Magyarok egy külföldi szemével [Puskás, paprika, fruit brandy or more? Hungarians through the eyes of a foreigner] by Daniel Haitas, a native speaker of English and lecturer, who obtained his law degree in Australia and his PhD at the University of Debrecen's Faculty of Law, seeking to introduce foreigners to the special features of Hungarian culture. Among other things, Daniel Haitas discussed the issue of mixing cultures and the meaning of Hungarian symbols.

“We do hope that Welcome Day – Freshers' Picnic will help our international students integrate more easily into the faculty community. We also hope that, after they graduate, a number of them will get involved in research here and contribute to building the faculty's international relations and overall reputation,” said Zsolt Hajnal.

The majority of the international students who are starting their legal training in Debrecen now come from Vietnam, Bangladesh, Jordan, and China.
