The University of Debrecen hosted this sports festival for the nineteenth time as a satellite event to Campus, one of Hungary’s largest pop music festivals, much to the delight of the students. This time, participants competed again in three events popular with young people: 3x3 basketball, beach volleyball and 5-a-side soccer.
Just like before, this year’s occasion was also jampacked with contestants and spectators, with more than a thousand people joining in the fun over the course of two days.
About 100–150 of these young people came from institutions of higher education across the border. An example would be the beach volleyball team from PCE (Partium Christian University, Transylvania), who took part in the sports festival for the first time. Thus, after so many years, students from Partium were once again represented at the competition.
According to Stefánia Tamara Bálint, a student at Partium Christian University, the event was a perfect choice for bringing young athletes together.
- We liked the venue very much. We have never been to such a nicely constructed university sports grounds spreading over such a large area before. As this is our first time here, we do not know too many people, but we hope to be back later, and by then there will be some familiar faces. The atmosphere was fantastic with music playing at the beach volleyball court, and we were surrounded by young people, so we really had a great time- she said.
The women’s 3x3 basketball championship at the Campus Sports Festival was won by the team CO-TEF, while Csibész Kutyák, a team made up of students from the University of Debrecen, won the men’s 3x3 basketball championship. The beach volleyball contest was won by Kispad és a lányok, a team consisting mostly of Debrecen students, and the 5-a-side soccer champions became students from the University of Debrecen too, with team DRS taking home the gold medals.
Campus Sports Festival is going to celebrate the china (or porcelain) anniversary of its foundation in 2027. Next year will be the 20th occasion for the event to be held.
