Young musicians can study in an international environment

Twenty masterclasses, twenty-two master teachers and nineteen instrumental sessions await applicants to the International Summer Academy for Young Musicians at the University of Debrecen. In keeping with tradition, the Zoltán Kodály World Youth Orchestra will be formed again this year, led by Tamás Vásáry, pianist and conductor.

For the 23rd time, the University of Debrecen's Faculty of Music is organising the International Summer Academy of Young Musicians for high school students, college students, university students and young music teachers from 7-19 July. This year's international event will offer a total of twenty masterclasses and two additional courses for students coming to the Faculty of Music. In addition to individual masterclasses, students will also have the opportunity to participate in chamber music and symphony orchestra work.
The summer academy will be of major professional importance not only for the faculty but also for the candidates.

- The presence of renowned professionals is very attractive to young people, as in music education students typically always choose a teacher. This gives students the guarantee that they will become even better musicians. We always try to innovate, and this will also be evident in the courses and repertoire, as we want to draw attention to the long road to the stage and the need to develop more than just instrumental skills," Judit Váradi, artistic director of the International Summer Academy for Young Musicians, told hirek.unideb.hu.

The summer academy will offer master classes on twelve different instruments: violin, bass violin, cello, flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, percussion and piano, and singers are also welcome. Applications for the flute master class are now closed, with the course filling up in record time, within two weeks.
In addition to the instrumental and vocal masterclasses, the Faculty of Music has announced two additional courses for the summer event. A session on the musicality of movement will be coordinated by Virág Dezső, and a session entitled Methodology of Practice - A complete training of musical attention will also be launched under the direction of László Stachó. In addition to musicality, the aim is to develop the students' stage skills.

This year, the masterclasses will again attract several experts from abroad. Orsolya Korcsolán violinist from Austria, József Kiss oboist from Germany, Wim van Hasselt from Belgium, Virág Dezső from the Netherlands will be coming to Debrecen, but students will also have the opportunity to learn from percussionist Alejandro Coello Calvo and pianist Giovanni Bertolazzi. The interest of foreign teachers and students shows that the international resonance of the Summer Academy has been growing steadily in recent years.

- Over the twenty-three years, the course has become very firmly established in the international community. We are keen to share not only national but also international good practice with participants, and the world orchestra is also a major call both at home and abroad. The opportunity to perform is a great incentive and a lasting experience for all young people," the artistic director added.

The preparations of the Zoltán Kodály World Youth Orchestra will again be led by pianist and conductor Tamás Vásáry and Zoltán Bolyky. After the rehearsals, the ensemble will give public concerts in Debrecen, Budapest and Satu Mare. The rehearsal period will start on 7 July in Debrecen, where the ensemble will learn the programme of the concerts in solo rehearsals and in orchestra rehearsals conducted by Tamás Vásáry with conductors Zoltán Bolyky and Andrea Daru. The world orchestra is scheduled to perform Verdi: Nabucco - Overture, Tchaikovsky: Swan Lake - excerpts, Kodály: János Háry - Suite.
Young musicians, students of music universities, faculties and institutes, and students of secondary schools can apply for the Masterclasses and World Music Orchestra from the age of 16. They can submit their applications by 31 May and will receive feedback on their successful application by 15 June. At the end of the summer academy, the organiser, the Faculty of Music, UD, will award a certificate of completion.
