Corneal transplantation is a surgical procedure to cure blindness caused by cornea diseases. Professor Béla Alberth, who was Director of the Ophthalmology Department for 25 years, performed almost 4,000 transplants and made corneal transplantation a routine procedure in the country. The special examination, monitoring and storage of the corneas to be transplanted is carried out in the Cornea Bank established at the Ophthalmology Department of the University of Debrecen in 1994 under the leadership of Professor László Módis.

We firmly consider the Cornea Outpatient Clinic with its modern operating conditions and solid foundations to serve the interests of not only domestic but also cross-border patient care, thus consolidating the position of the University of Debrecen and the Clinical Centre on the map of Europe and in the world", said Zoltán Szabó, Vice-Rector and President of the Clinical Centre of the University of Debrecen, at the inauguration ceremony of the Cornea Outpatient Clinic.
The newly established Cornea Outpatient Clinic helps to detect corneal diseases at an early stage, to assess disease progression and perform surgery with precision.
"The Board of Trustees of the University of Debrecen Foundation considers it important that the institution should implement projects that contribute to improving quality of life, while also supporting education and research. We will continue to do our utmost to ensure that the Hungarian health care system can develop in the future," said György Kossa, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation for the University of Debrecen.
The instruments purchased in recent years are mostly used to examine people with ocular surface diseases, abnormalities of cornea, and cataracts.
"For Debrecen to become a renowned centre for our region of three million people, the local health care system needs skilled professionals and an infrastructure meeting the demands of the times. In this venture, we have created a historic alliance with the University of Debrecen, which is one of the main pillars of the city's care policy. Thanks to this alliance, health care in Debrecen is now stable and well-functioning, and we also have the room for further improvement," added László Papp, Mayor of Debrecen.
The equipment found at the Cornea Outpatient Clinic's is unique in the country.

The Cornea Outpatient Clinic also supports research into corneal diseases.

The staff of the Clinic and the Department of Ophthalmology pursue their profession with scientific rigor and commitment to research. It is therefore indispensible that the University of Debrecen provides the most modern conditions for their high-quality medical and scientific work," said László Mátyus, Dean of the Faculty of General Medicine of the University of Debrecen.
Almost a thousand patients are examined in the two surgeries of the clinic every month.

As one of the national centres for corneal transplantation, the Department of Ophthalmology provides ophthalmic outpatient and inpatient care at the highest level of progressiveness to more than two million inhabitants of six counties in the Northern Great Plain and Northern Hungary region.
