Opening of the Academic Year for Chinese Students at the Summer School

The Summer School of Debrecen (Debreceni Nyári Egyetem) has been expanding its system of relationships with the inclusion of Chinese universities. The students who have arrived from Tientsin were welcomed at a beginning-of-the year dinner.

The young people who have arrived from the University of Tientsin are spending their first academic year in Debrecen. They will not only attend language classes but will also study linguistics and literature, at the same time improving their  writing skills, reading and reading comprehension.

The youngest ones are 16 high-school students, who have arrived here from Beijing International Studies University. In addition to Hungarian, during the academic year they will familiarise themselves with literature and history. As well as studying the language, they will participate in some kind of cultural programme or excursion: starting with yoUDay to arts and craft activities to visiting Budapest, Eger and lake Balaton. They are very active, love to do sports, and make conscious efforts to familiarise themselves with various aspects of Hungarian culture.

The most experienced Chinese students are seasoned learners this term: Chinese students who studied Hungarian in Debrecen for a year two years ago are starting their university studies at the Hungarian Institute of the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Debrecen. In his opening speech Director Péter Szaffkó asked students to use every possible opportunity  to learn Hungarian while they are here. He advised them to find out as much as possible about all things  Hungarian, find out what Hungarian people do, what they think and what they buy.

At present the University of Debrecen is involved in education cooperation with four Chinese universities. Within the framework of the seven-year education programme signed between Beijing International Studies University and the University of Debrecen the students receive a degree in Hungarian language and literature at the end of their studies. During the four years preceding their BA education they take turns at studying Hungarian languge and literature, and history , as well as  familiarising themselves with Hungarian culture and traditions in China and in Debrecen.
