The promotion of the humanities at the international level

An English-language Facebook page named Humaniora has been launched to promote news and events related to the study of the humanities at the University of Debrecen (UD). The objective of Humaniora is to present our institution’s educational and scholarly achievements to as broad an audience abroad as possible, thereby increasing the development of international relationships at the student, faculty, researcher and academic levels alike.

The name of the site, Humaniora, is a Latin term serving as an umbrella concept for all fields within the humanities. Its origins date back to the time of Renaissance humanism in Italy in the 14th and 15th centuries, and it covers the areas of classical ancient learning, including language, literature, philosophy, the arts and history.

The primary aim of the Humaniora program, launched this year, is to highlight the international profile of the humanities at the University of Debrecen.

- The international success of our institution’s educational work and efforts is clearly visible through the fact that almost 8,000 international students from about 140 countries are enrolled to pursue their studies at the University of Debrecen at present. In addition, nevertheless, the international connections themselves are also significant, thanks to which the faculties and various departments regularly host a variety of academic conferences. We can arrange joint publications to be released, invite a number of visiting lecturers, and the university has already awarded honorary doctoral degrees to distinguished professors from several prestigious and highly renowned universities- said László Pósán, Head of the Humaniora program, to hirek.unideb.hu.

The Faculty of Humanities (BTK) at the University of Debrecen (UD) has recently reached a significant milestone, as it has been ranked among the world’s top 550 institutions in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) 2026 subject rankings for the first time in its history.

- This achievement also demonstrates the essential role of international visibility, as high scores in the humanities carry great weight in determining a university’s final position in international rankings. The Humaniora program aims to continue to promote this field- said László Pósán.

The program director has already contacted the heads of the university’s humanities departments and institutes to make sure that the https://www.facebook.com/humaniorak/ page should be continuously updated in order to display the latest relevant news and events.

Apart from the Facebook page, the English-language Humaniora website is also to be launched soon, offering even more opportunities for those studying and cultivating the humanities at the University of Debrecen with the aim of further enhancing their international visibility.
