Prospects of artistic relations with China

The University of Debrecen has recently received a delegation from Zhangjiajie College in China. The delegation from this Far Eastern institution of higher education, which has nearly 20,000 students, a broad range of courses and as many as 52 undergraduate programs on offer, was primarily interested in our university's programs on the arts.

At the meeting, which was prepared with the help and support of the Hungarian Consulate General in Shanghai, the delegation of Zhangjiajie College, located in Hunan Province in central China, was headed by Zheng Jianguo, a professor at the Art School, senior advisor to the China Symphony Orchestra Development Foundation, and member of the Shanghai International Cultural Association Council. He and the delegates were welcomed by Károly Pető, Vice-Rector of the University of Debrecen (UD) for General Affairs, and Okszána Kiszil, Director of Coordination and Strategy.

The Chinese delegation was primarily interested in the courses and training activities offered by the Faculty of Music (ZK) and the Confucius Institute at UD. During the meeting, Vice-Rector Károly Pető also talked about features of the education provided by the Faculty of Humanities (BTK) and the Faculty of Child Education and Special Education. Since Zhangjiajie College also offers a nursing program, the relevant English-language opportunities available at the Faculty of Health Sciences at UD were also discussed.

During the course of the meeting, it turned out that the guests steadily support artistic activities; among other things, they organized the 40th Shanghai Spring Music Festival in March this year. Their plans include holding a large-scale Chinese fine arts festival in Debrecen entitled China Stage, which would last 3 to 5 days. The parties agreed to continue discussions later with the inclusion of the Faculty of Music and the Confucius Institute in order to work out the details.

From year to year, there are more and more Chinese students coming to the University of Debrecen to study, with their number currently exceeding 400. Currently, the majority of them are enrolled at the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Science and Technology, and the Faculty of Informatics.
