Surgical care to start at the new Children’s Emergency Centre

From the third of September, the paediatric surgical in-patient unit will be operating in the recently opened Children’s Surgery Centre of the University of Debrecen. The new building provides state-of-the-art treatment for children. The centre has 2-3 bedded wards with bathrooms, two operating theatres, examination and service rooms.

- The Children’s Surgery Centre, built with the help of a HUF 3 billion grant and more than HUF 550 million in university funds, provides a solid basis for paediatric surgery activities at the forefront of European professionalism, said Zoltán Szabó, President of the Clinical Centre of the University of Debrecen.  

Paediatric surgery opens on Tuesday, September 3rd, at the Paediatric Surgery Centre. The new operating theatres and wards in the building meet the highest international standards.

- State-of-the-art equipment and instruments for operations, including modern LED lights, integrated cameras, and central monitors, operating tables, image intensifiers and fluoroscopy equipment have been acquired. In addition, of course, the laparoscopic equipment used in our old building, which was also recently purchased, has been relocated and the new tower is also capable of three-dimensional imaging. We have at our disposal the latest microsurgical instruments for the care of premature babies, special endoscopic devices developed specifically for children's surgeries," said László Sasi Szabó, Head of the Department of Paediatric Surgery at the University of Debrecen’s Clinical Centre for Paediatrics.

The specialist added: following the operations, children can recover in spacious, modern wards with bathrooms.


New beds and spacious, transparent spaces welcome sick children in the 15-bed paediatric surgery section, where currently schedule 1300-1400 anaesthetic operations are scheduled a year for children from premature birth to 18 years of age. Our activities cover the whole spectrum of paediatric surgery. Our specialities include developmental anomalies, cleft lip and palate corrections, genitourinary surgery and oncological surgery. Today, mainly perform minimally invasive procedures are performed, whether it is a hernia operation or a paediatric inflammatory bowel disease, but oncological surgery is also performed using this technique, if the extent of the disease allows," said László Sasi Szabó.

The paediatric surgical unit is located on the first floor of the new Children’s Surgery Centre and can be accessed from the building's ambulance entrance.

The surgical department will continue to be located in the old Paediatric Clinic building, and the emergency department will continue to operate in the same location.
