Poetry written on a glass wall

Many foreign and Hungarian students of the University of Debrecen wrote their favourite poems on the glass wall of the Life and Natural Sciences Library, UD. This year, the University of Debrecen University and National Library (DEENK) has launched a community initiative to celebrate Poetry Day.

DEENK has joined the Post a Poem movement in 2024, so on 11 April, the Hungarian Poetry Day, it held its traditional action for almost the tenth time. In front of the Library of Life and Natural Sciences, the library staff encouraged students to share with their fellow students the quotes they like so much. Every year, the university library is keen to emphasise the importance of reading, the cultivation of national culture and the importance of poetry.
Quotations were constantly accumulating on the glass surfaces of the ÉTK building throughout the day, and there were also several poems in foreign languages, some of them sharing life wisdom in their mother tongue, and some of them by their favourite turbo folk entertainer(s) from their home country.

- We joined the national Post a Poem on the Street campaign almost a decade ago, but this is a special event on our pemises  because the glass surfaces of the library are perfect for handwritten quotes, creating a unique visual experience for students who happen to pass by and linger for a moment. We are very proud that, in addition to Hungarian students, young people from other countries are also receptive to the idea of a flashmob and are also motivated by the event," said Bettina Bíró-Bácsó, Head of DEENK's Communication and Marketing Department.

The quotes, which could perfectly serve as personal messages, could also be posted on the boards in the community space of the Technical Library by the students participating in the action.

In connection with the Day of Hungarian Poetry, the University of Debrecen's University and National Library has also announced its popular poetry writing competition for the fourth time in a row. The motto of this year's competition is "My place in the world", and entries can be sent to kommunikacio@lib.unideb.hu until midnight on 6 May.  Poems are welcome in image format (jpg, png or pdf), but can also be submitted on paper at any of the nine units of the University and National Library of Debrecen.
