As a member of the Scientific and Social Advisory Board assisting the work of the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the foundation maintaining our university, Professor Czaja arrived in Debrecen for a meeting evaluating the results of the year that has passed since the board’s foundation, where he gave a lecture at the Institute of History of the Faculty of Humanities (BTK) of the University of Debrecen (UD) before the start of the board meeting.
The lecture series of the Hungarian Research Network-University of Debrecen: "Military History of Medieval Hungary and Central Europe" research group (titled Medieval Military History Lecture Series) is aimed to strengthen the international relations between the research group, the Institute of History of the University of Debrecen and the Doctoral School of History and Ethnography.
During the process of designing and scheduling the presentations, it was an important point of departure that each topic should be presented by a renowned and recognized researcher of international fame, which would then provide an opportunity for instructors, researchers and students of UD to engage in a professional discourse with researchers from other countries, to exchange research findings and experiences, and to discuss the details and opportunities for potential future collaboration, such as study visits, research partnerships, joint conferences and publications.
Within the above framework, the 14th volume of the book series of the research group Memoria Hungariae, edited by professors of the University of Debrecen Attila Bárány and László Pósán, has been published recently under the title Zwischen Ostsee und Adria - Ostmitteleuropa im Mittelalter und in der Frühen Neuzeit, Politische-, wirtschaftliche-, religiösische- und wissenschaftliche Beziehungen.
- This volume also nurtures the previous scientific relations of the research group, as the publication was published with the cooperation of six research institutes in Poland, Germany, Estonia and England (besides Debrecen, Pécs, Toruń, Gdańsk, Tartu, Bonn) and with the cooperation of a team of authors representing several disciplines – said Attila Bárány, head of the research group in his opening speech.
The head of the Department of Medieval, Early Modern Hungarian History and Ancillary Studies at the DE BTK is not an independent department, he stressed: "the long years of joint work and the meeting of the Scientific and Social Advisory Board created such a favourable opportunity to invite Professor Czaja as the first lecturer of the series, who gave a lecture on Military Orders in East-Central and Northern Europe, which is both special and topical, as Debrecen is one of the Hungarian centres of research on the topic - political-diplomatic relations and medieval military history of medieval Hungary.
- The project is an integral part of the Memoria Hungariae research group, which has been in existence in Debrecen since 2010, and which is investigating the place of the medieval Kingdom of Hungary in Europe, the professor said.
The next lecturer in the series will be Helmut Flachenecker, Professor at the Institute of History at the University of Würzburg, who will give a PhD lecture and seminar in English at the University of Debrecen on 24 October at 10 am and 2 pm.
