Students from the University of Debrecen (UD) interested in working in European Union (EU) institutions were invited to the event organized by the Ministry of European Union Affairs (MEUA).
“There is a huge variety of job opportunities in the institutions of the European Union at present. We wish to bring these prospects as close as possible to the students of the University of Debrecen, so that they should not feel that it is impossible to work in Brussels, either as interns or even on a long-term basis,” said Emese Pogány, Head of Student Career Center of Student Relations and Services Centre.
This event was a part of the series of lectures on careers offered by Student Career Center, which has been running since 2014 as an optional course for two credits available to any student at the university. A total of 100 places at the course are usually signed up for and taken within a day or two at the beginning of each semester.
Head of the EÜM department for EU political communication, staff policy and public relations Viktor Kecskés recalled that he had graduated from university in Szeged and, as a student from the provinces, he had felt that news of EU opportunities did not always reach him and his fellow students.
“I majored and graduated in international studies and, when asked what I wanted to be, I used to say, ambassador. However, there was nobody there to tell me how to get into that position, how to become a professional diplomat or how to get a job in an EU institution. That is the reason why we have created this program,” said Viktor Kecskés.
Staff members from EÜM Leila Tóth-Taki, Roberta Lilla Nyics and Anna Vaszkó shared with our students their experiences as interns, working for a student organization in one of the EU institutions or during Hungary’s EU Presidency. All three of them agreed that it is worth trying these forms of work, as there is a lot to learn and fresh graduates with whatever work experience are at a huge advantage on the labor market.
During the course of the panel discussion, detailed information about positions in what is called Europe of Nations Career Programme and other internship programs in EU institutions was shared, and the students could also ask questions to be addressed then by the ministry's staff.
