Developing and improving university partnerships

Several delegations from China have visited the University of Debrecen recently in order to discuss cooperation possibilities in the fields of engineering and natural sciences, student exchange programs and even plans for a cultural festival. A delegation from the city of Nanjing paid a visit to the recently inaugurated Vehicle Laboratory, while experts from Wuhan University took a tour of the laboratories of the Faculty of Science and Technology.

The members of a delegation from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (NUAA) discussed the possibility of student exchange programs at the University of Debrecen, and the two institutions recorded the relevant plans in a cooperation agreement. This document was signed by Vice Rector for Education Elek Bartha and Chairman of NUAA’s University Council Zhen Liang.

- Our institution was founded way back in 1952, as one of the first aviation colleges in the People's Republic of China. By now, it has developed into a high-level research university that focuses primarily on engineering sciences, integrates natural and engineering sciences, and implements coordinated development in a variety of scientific fields, such as engineering and natural sciences, economics, management and the humanities. Each of these embody the unique characteristics of the aircraft industry and civil aviation- said Zhen Liang while presenting Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

NUAA would like to expand its global network of 232 partner universities and research institutes by cooperating with the University of Debrecen, placing strong emphasis on talent development and hosting visiting lecturers and guest professors.

At the official part of the meeting, Director of Coordination and Strategy Okszána Kiszil gave a presentation of the wide-ranging educational and third mission portfolio of the University of Debrecen, its campuses, innovation park and industrial as well as institutional partnerships. Subsequently, Head of the Department of Vehicle Engineering József Menyhárt elaborated in detail on the strategic objectives, infrastructure and training system of the Faculty of Engineering.

After the meeting in the Main Building, the next point on the agenda for the visitors from Nanjing was to see the recently established Vehicle Laboratory of our Faculty of Engineering.

There was also a group of representatives from Wuhan University visiting the University of Debrecen lately. This time, the delegation of the Chinese partner institution came for a visit together with the global and local leaders of the company EVE Energy. Their delegation also included Founding President of EVE Energy Co., Ltd., Liu Jincheng, as a member.

During the meeting with Vice-Rector Károly Pető, Coordination and Strategy Director Okszána Kiszil, and Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology Ferenc Kun, the Chinese partners reviewed the current and future cooperation possibilities between the two universities and the company. They also touched upon a range of other topics including the 450 Chinese international students enrolled at the University of Debrecen, our institution’s membership in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) partner university network, which is unique Hungary, and the platinum level status achieved in the FISU Healthy Campus qualification system, as well as the Confucius Institute at UD, which is also decisive from the aspect of education and culture.

Both Vice-Rector Károly Pető and Zhang Pingwen, President of Wuhan University, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Professor of Mathematics, agreed that each of the two institutions maintain close cooperation with their respective industrial partners, which guarantees success in achieving their objectives. The Vice-Rector of the University of Debrecen added that, in addition to the Faculty of Science and Technology, even the Faculty of Engineering and/or the Faculty of Economics and Business could also join in the implementation of the joint institutional plans in the future.

As a conclusion of their program, the delegation of EVE Energy and that of Wuhan University visited several laboratories of the Faculty of Science and Technology.

Another delegation representing Ningbo Association for Science and Technology, which coordinates the institutions of higher education and their organizations active in the fields of pharmaceutical science and traditional Chinese medicine in Ningbo, a city of almost ten million inhabitants, also came to the University of Debrecen in recent days.

The head of the delegation, Vice President Shi Ying, and his colleagues presented a plan for a cultural festival related to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), which they have developed for next year's presidential roundtable forum of the university research cooperation network of the Belt and Road Initiative. This event is planned to be held at the University of Debrecen in the spring of 2026.

Following the presentation of the planned program, the parties agreed to continue the discussions to sort out the details in January next year.
