Decades of Industry in Debrecen

The connection between the university, the town and industry will be in the focus of a 2-day conference that has begun today at the University of Debrecen. This is the third time the event called The Days of Industry has been organised jointly by the Faculty of Engineering and the town.

The objective of the event is to facilitate cooperation between the town, the Faculty of Engineering and industry, as well as to promote a competitive education of engineers in line with the needs of industry.

- I think we should change the title – it is not about the days, but rather about the years or decades of industry in Debrecen, said Ákos Pintér in his welcome speech. The vice rector for general affairs pointed out that Debrecen is a symbol of development, due to a cooperation between between the town, the university and industrial partners. The traditional duty of the university used to be education and research. However, this had changed by the early years of the 21st century. Innovation had become integral part of the institute's activities, as new results must be integrated in education and research. In this regard, businesses are of great help – said Ákos Pintér.

Following the welcome speech, Mayor László Papp explained the plans of the town in his presentation entitled "Strategy for business development in Debrecen"..

- Debrecen has been going through a revolutionary change. Before 2015, infrastructural development was in the centre of this process, but by today it has given way to economic development, said László Papp. The mayor pointed out that the two areas should be improved in parallel in order to ensure a high quality of life for those living here. The result of the efforts made in the past three years to develop the local economy is over 500 billion HUF investment and more than 6,000 new jobs in the town, which allows us to talk about a D 2030, instead of a Debrecen 2050 programme – added László Papp.

Dean Edit Szűcs explained the role of the Faculty of Engineering in technical education in Debrecen.

-  The education of engineers has a 50-year tradition in Debrecen, and the academic programmes have continuously evolved. Back then we dared to dream:  We wanted to operate as a university, not as a college, and to run an English course as well. Ever since I was elected as dean in 2007, my colleagues and I have continuously improved our relationship with businesses in order to meet their demands in terms of academic programmes and to involve professionals in our education – Edit Szűcs began her speech.

The 2-day event provides an opportunity for the various units of the Faculty to introduce themselves, so it will also include programmes and conferences in the fields of mechatronics, environmental protection and mechanical engineering. In the framework of the Days of Industry, the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering will hold an international conference entitled the "6th International Scientific Conference on Advances in Mechanical Engineering", for which over 150 people have registered from 6 countries. Attended by 28 companies, the programme will include 95 presentations. The 6th Mechanical Engineering Exhibition will cover the whole spectrum of the field from design to manufacturing.

In addition to displaying their products and explaining their activities, the exhibiting businesses will also offer trainee programmes and thesis topics. It will offer a great opportunity for engineering students to establish contact with the companies.

On Friday, the last day of the 2-day conference, Ferenc Anisits, development engineer and honorary university lecturer, designer of the diesel engine used by BMW for 30 years, will deliver a lecture entitled "Technical Education at the Service of Society" at the Faculty of Engineering at 1 p.m. (Debrecen, Ótemető u. 2-4. Room U002). The lecture will also be available live in the Facebook profile of UD.
