The SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR) measures the performance of universities, academies and research institutes. It ranks the institutions on the basis of a complex indicator, which combines three separate indicators: research performance, innovation output and societal impact measured by web visibility.
The ranking organisation examined 338 universities and research institutes in Eastern Europe for their performance in the field of energy, which includes energy engineering and electric power technology, fuel technology, renewable energy, sustainability, environmental protection, and other segments of the area.
The bibliometric analytical system used by SCImago measures the performance of institutions on the basis of the institutional affiliations of documents available in the Scopus international database of scientific publications. Following the precise identification of universities, academies and research institutes, the system assigns publications and references in the database to the individual institutions, which allows the ranking of the institutions.
The University of Debrecen is ranked 25th in the list, finishing 20th in the category of research performance, 37th in innovation output and 12th in societal impact.
- It is a great success that UD, as the best institution in Hungary, has been ranked 25th, outperforming highly prestigious institutions in the CEE region such as the Lomonosov Moscow State University (Russia, 47th), the Jagiellonian University (Poland, 67th), and Charles University (Czech Republic, 94th). One of the important factors behind this success is that in the framework of the Thematic Excellence Programme five research groups carried out projects in the fields of energy and energetics in 2020 – explained Ákos Pintér, vice rector for general affairs to hirek.unideb.hu.
Three Russian universities finished at the top of the list: The State University of Management, the Moscow State Regional University, and the Russian Academy of Sciences. Of the Hungarian institutions the University of Debrecen, the Research Center for Natural Sciences, the University of Szeged, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, the Pannon University, the Wigner Research Centre for Physics, Szent István University, the University of Miskolc, Eötvös Lóránd University, Óbudai University, the Centre for Energy Research, and Pázmány Péter Catholic University made it to the list.
