MÜZLI: artificial intelligence as the industrial revolution of our time

Is ChatGPT a curse or a blessing? To what extent can artificial intelligence develop further? What are the areas where AI (artificial intelligence) may play a decisive part in the near future? These are but a few of the questions that the master instructors of Institute of Engineering and Business Development Innovation (MÜZLI - Mérnöki és Üzletfejlesztési Innovációs Intézet) of the University of Debrecen sought answers to on Wednesday.

At the roundtable discussion organized within the framework of MÜZLI Alumni Party, both former and current students of the institute had the opportunity to talk and exchange views informally and also ask questions directly addressing professionals who occupy key positions in the Hungarian and international corporate sphere. The latter group at the semester-closing event of the institute included the following individuals, who did their best to answer the questions coming from the students: Endre Ascsillán, Head of MÜZLI and Vice President of GE for Central and Eastern Europe, Gergő Lencsés, former Global Supply Chain Strategist and President of Dual Training Council, Attila Ferik, Senior Director of ArisGlobal, Attila Dezső, Senior Attorney at CHSH Dezső & Partners Law Office, and Zsolt Bertalan, Director of Technology and Innovation of MVM Zrt.

Several systems that are based on artificial intelligence have been in use for a number of years in a variety of fields and their specific segments, such as economics, medicine, design, defense, computer programs and video games. However, the appearance of ChatGPT has definitely stirred up and changed the AI market,” said Endre Ascsillán, Vice President of General Electric Central and Eastern Europe and Head of MÜZLI, in his opening address.

Former Global Supply Chain Strategist and President of Dual Training Council Gergő Lencsés elaborated on how, during the course of technical development, it was us humans who in fact taught these algorithms to do a lot of different things that we had thought only we could handle. His examples included painting or writing a Shakespearean sonnet.

OpenAI’s new, easy-to-use large language model and text generation program, ChatGPT, has made the diverse and widespread application of artificial intelligence pretty obvious and easily accessible by providing free access to it for ordinary users. This has shocked and terrified quite a few of us, while it should be also quite clear that the conscious use and development of AI can bring about a currently unfathomable development,” said Gergő Lencsés

According to President Lencsés, the use of artificial intelligence in education, including university and other forms of higher education, could bring about a considerable change in the upcoming years, prompting these institutions to become open to this change.

Attila Ferik, Senior Director of ArisGlobal, said that he believed that healthcare could be one of the most significant users and beneficiaries of AI.

“The algorithms mentioned above can be of great help in the broad field of diagnostics. They can play a decisive part in the analysis of imaging technologies such as X-rays, MRI or CT scans. However, independent decisions cannot be made by these systems, and there will always be a need for a final check and control by a specialist. Efficient cooperation between users and machines could continue to work like this for decades to come,” said Attila Ferik.

According to the IT expert, AI can also appear in a range of other areas, such as the construction industry.

“It is the development of technology that has made the creation of artificial intelligence possible, but AI is not yet able to innovate. An essential element of innovations is creativity, which knowledge has not yet been acquired by AI. These algorithms can be used in fairly diverse ways; for example, in the field of energy, forecasting systems make use of them,” said Zsolt Bertalan.

The Director of Technology and Innovation of MVM Zrt. also discussed that, with the establishment of Mesterséges Intelligencia Koalíció [Artificial Intelligence Coalition] in Hungary, our country can be easily at the forefront of AI development and applications.

“Ordinary legal work could have been automated for decades, but technology still has not yet penetrated the legal sphere. Nonetheless, the use of AI raises major questions and issues in the areas of personality rights or intellectual property and liability determination, where a uniform regulation of the system is not yet available or possible,” said Attila Dezső, Senior Attorney at CHSH Dezső & Partners Law Office.

The participants of the roundtable discussion fully agreed on the necessity to control the learning process of artificial intelligence, to check the learning database of algorithms and to incorporate safety factors.
