Countries that form a bridge between Europe and Asia have a decisive role in the foreign relations system of the University of Debrecen. This is well demonstrated by the fact that in the past year alone the institution concluded cooperation agreements with twenty higher education institutions of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan.
In the spirit of the existing relations with partner institutions from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, a Turkic Corner was opened in the Main Building of the University of Debrecen in December 2024 to present the cultural heritage, traditions and languages of Central Asian countries. This community space offers a special meeting point for students from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, and to anyone interested in the region.
In order to strengthen and further broaden the relations, the institution initiated its accession to the Turkic Universities Union via the Ministry of Culture and Innovation, which was approved at the organization’s last general meeting held at Tashkent International University, which is currently holding the presidency. Rectors, academicians and representatives of more than 70 member universities attended the meeting to discuss the possibilities of cooperation in higher education in the Turkic world.
At the event, Ambassador Kubanychbek Omuraliev, Secretary General of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS), emphasized that education has always been a bridge between cultures, and that the Turkic Universities Union and the Orhun Exchange Program represent a modern embodiment of the centuries-old tradition of scientific exchange among Turkic peoples.
The Secretary General highlighted that the Organization of Turkic States has approved initiatives aimed at the reorganization of the Orhun Exchange Program and at the establishment of the Turkic World Higher Education Area. He also announced that the OTS will allocate one million US dollars to support the implementation and expansion of the Orhun Exchange Program.
