At the opening ceremony, Péter Korondi, a professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Mechatronics of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Debrecen and head of the permanent secretariat of the Power Electronics and Motion Control Council (PEMC-C)—recalled how the conference series had started.
- The first event of this kind, which was held in Budapest in 1970, was organized by the Hungarian Electrotechnical Association, with Professor István Rácz acting as the chair of the conference. By the way, the international scientific body that currently oversees and organizes the conference series, called the Power Electronics and Motion Control Council, had also been founded in the Hungarian capital city in 1996. Its conception was initiated by Professor István Nagy (who was also the chair of PEMC '96 at that time) and the Polish professor Włodzimierz Koczara. The rest of the founders were also university professors and researchers from Central Europe- recounted Péter Korondi, a professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Mechatronics of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Debrecen.
During the three days of the recent PEMC-C event in Tallinn, there were six keynote plenary sessions and two invited lectures delivered. These presentations focused on electrification, new paradigms in electrical energy distribution and novel power electronic switching components. Several discussions were held in order to prepare potential project proposals, including those under the V4 framework, Erasmus+ and Horizon, in each one of which the University of Debrecen is now also eligible to participate.
- The arrival of BMW in Debrecen has further enhanced the attention on our city. As a consequence, we can safely state that the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Debrecen has firmly established itself on the international map of power electronics research- said Professor Péter Korondi.
At the conference, our university was represented by Róbert Mikuska and László Keczán, who are both teaching assistants and doctoral students at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Mechatronics. Róbert Mikuska talked about the educational achievements of the “Scientific Workshop on Machine Learning-Based Data-Driven Polytopic Modeling and Robust Control,” outlining through several practical examples how students at the Faculty of Engineering explore the mysteries of data-driven modelling, an approach that moves beyond traditional descriptions based on differential equations. In his presentation, László Keczán introduced the latest findings reported from the Autonomous and Assistive Robotics (A²R) Research Laboratory, headed by Associate Professor Husam Abdulkareem Almusawi.
Apart from organizing conferences, the office of PEMC-C provides assistance to the development of collaborations and the submission of international grant proposals. Its activities are directly supported by the PEMC-C secretariat, which is now based in Debrecen, relocated from Budapest to our city five years ago. There have been a number of EU-sponsored research and educational projects successfully implemented under the aegis of PEMC-C recently, which students at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Debrecen (DE MK) may encounter in the form of animated learning materials and web-based measurements developed within the framework of these projects. The objective of the organization is to continue working in the best traditions of implementing similar projects based on successful applications for grants.
