This was the first time the University of Debrecen had been ranked on the thematic list of the prestigious British Times Higher Education (THE) ranking, and achieved a place right within the category of 301-400th.
The list of 2020 THE World University Rankings by Subject: Social Sciences highlights the universities that are leading across sociology, geography, politics and international studies, and communication and media studies subjects. THE rankings uses the same rigorous and balanced range of 13 performance indicators as the overall World University Rankings, but the methodology has been recalibrated to suit the individual fields.
Regarding social sciences, performance indicators are grouped into five areas: teaching 32,4% (learning environment); research 32,6% (volume, income and reputation); citations 25% (research influence); international outlook 7,5% (staff, students and researchers); and industry income 2,5% (knowledge transfer). The University of Debrecen received the most points for citations.
Besides UD, Corvinus University Budapest (301-400), Budapest University of Technology and Economics (401-500), and Eötvös Loránd University (501-600) were ranked on the list.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (United States), Stanford University (United States) and the University of Oxford (United Kingdom) and Harvard University (United States) were ranked as best.
