In early November, a delegation of leading healthcare professionals from Tianjin, China's fourth largest city, visited the University of Debrecen. The delegation members held talks with Károly Pető, Vice-Rector General, and Oksana Kiszil, Director of Coordination and Strategy, where they reviewed in detail the University of Debrecen's training system, infrastructure, and international partner network, with particular emphasis on the fact that the institution is the only Hungarian higher education institution that is a full member of the University Network For Research Collaboration, the partner university network of the One Belt, One Road initiative.
The Chinese health professionals called for cooperation between the University of Debrecen and Tianjin institutions in several areas, including the possibility of joint research and development projects, as well as the launch of student and teacher mobility programs and joint courses.
The ideas were set out in a cooperation agreement signed by Károly Pető, Vice-Rector of the University, Han Jinyan, Director-General of the Tianjin Municipal Bureau of Disease Control and Prevention, and Wang Hui, Dean of the International Education School of Tianjin Medical College.
The parties agreed to hold further consultations to clarify the details of the cooperation opportunities.
Following the meeting, the delegation visited the Clinical Center, the Medical Imaging Clinic, and, as part of the university program, the Confucius Institute.
Vice-Rector Károly Pető also signed a cooperation agreement with President Xie Huaqing, head of the Shanghai Polytechnic University delegation, renewing the document previously signed in 2016.
The dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Géza Husi, also participated in the negotiations prior to the signing, alongside Oksana Kiszil, Director of Coordination and Strategy, and gave a detailed presentation of the faculty's training portfolio, infrastructure, and research directions.
With 16 institutes and faculties, more than 16,000 full-time students, and approximately 1,200 teachers and employees, the Shanghai university plans to cooperate with the University of Debrecen in several areas. Among other things, the meeting discussed the inclusion of Chinese PhD students in the doctoral program of the Faculty of Engineering, the reception of guest lecturers from the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Economics at the University of Debrecen, as well as a joint research program and the operation of a related joint laboratory.
The Chinese side highlighted the advantages of membership in the One Belt, One Road initiative's partner university network, which would allow the two universities to jointly apply for Chinese funding.
After discussing the details, delegation leader Xie Huaqing invited the leaders of the University of Debrecen to the Global Partner Week event planned for March at Shanghai Polytechnic University, and the delegation members concluded the program with a visit to the Confucius Institute.
