This was the first time that the Ambassador of the Republic of Ecuador, who has been serving in Hungary for a year, came to visit the University of Debrecen. The high-ranking diplomat was officially welcomed in the Main Building by Vice-Rector General Károly Pető, Director of Coordination and Strategy Okszána Kiszil, and Attila Jenei, Director of Coordinating Center for International Education.
After receiving an information package about our institution’s history, training and research portfolio, infrastructure, international network, and student data, Cynthia Mayer Zavala expressed her appreciation concerning the fact that 21 of the 110 students from Ecuador currently studying in Hungary had chosen to be enrolled at the University of Debrecen. Three of these young people are doctoral students, while the rest of them are enrolled in master’s programs at the following faculties: Science and Technology, General Medicine, Information Technology, Health Sciences, Engineering, and Agriculture, Food Science and Environmental Management.
The majority of these students have managed to come to the University of Debrecen with the support of the scholarship Stipendium Hungaricum and, in order to increase their numbers, the ambassador is intent on initiating the extension of this scholarship opportunity to include undergraduate programs as well. The possibility of this, as well as other potential forms of support, were both discussed at the meeting.
Cynthia Mayer Zavala also urged the opening of direct institutional cooperation channels and the launch of research programs between universities in Debrecen and Ecuador. She is convinced that the close relationship with the Hungarian Embassy in Quito, the capital city of Ecuador, will also help in the effort to establish partnerships.
