A More Favorable Position for UD in the latest QS World Rankings

The University of Debrecen has moved forward from the 35th to the 31st position in the Quacquarelli Symonds world rankings. The most recent list of universities in European and Central Asian countries under the title Emerging Europe and Central Asia (EECA) was published this past Wednesday.

The improvement in our evaluation is due to two of the chief strengths of our institution: the number of international students (ranked 17th) and academic reputation (ranked 31st). The University of Debrecen occupies the 31st position in the 2019 rankings, which means an improvement of 4 positions as compared to last year’s results.

For the list containing 300 institutions of higher education, a total of 10 indicators have been assessed: academic reputation (30%), employer reputation (20%), faculty/student ratio (10%), papers per faculty and international research network (10%-10%), staff with a PhD, citations per paper and web impact (5%-5%), and international faculty and international students (2.5%-2.5%).

As opposed to the QS World University Rankings, this list displays the quality of the universities in developing countries more objectively, since it does not contain institutions from the English-speaking world and it compares the indicators of universities with similar backgrounds regarding sources available to them.

At the top of the list, there are two institutions from Russia, Lomonosov Moscow State University and Novosibirsk State University, while the third place is taken by Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic. The list includes a total of 11 universities from Hungary, out of which four has made it to the top forty, with the University of Debrecen securing the 31st place for itself.
