In the spirit of the European Week of Sport, the University of Debrecen also encouraged students and staff to engage in sports activities together. The Institute of Sports Science Coordination offered a choice of six different branches of sports, so the voluntary participants could choose from among 3x3 basketball, padel, tennis, 5-a-side soccer, aerobics and pickleball. While in some of these, the focus was only on the activity itself, there were also several cases, where the competition was quite fierce in order to win medals.
The 3x3 basketball tournament, the popularity of which has rapidly grown recently, was held in a genuinely international atmosphere, with numerous new players and teams experiencing the unique excitement of the first September challenge. The games were played from afternoon well into the night, numbering almost forty altogether. In the end, the team called “Béna fiúk” got into the final, facing the “Heisenbergers.” “Béna fiúk” then clinched the victory with a last-second three-pointer, while the "Hella" team were happy for their bronze medals.
The doubles games in padel, featuring both international and Hungarian students showcased excellent performances. The gold medal went to the duo of Ádám Bendegúz Kovács and Ábel Jónizs. Their opponents in the final, Péter László Puskás and Krisztián Juhász finished second, while the team of Badrieh Zein Eddin Amjed Salahaldeen and Badrieh Izzeldeen Amjed Salahaldeen rounded out the podium. In addition to the competitive part, beginners also had a chance to try out the sport, learn about the game and master the rules of padel to some extent.
Yet another strong contingent of competitors assembled for the tennis tournament held as part of the European Week of Sport, where out of the 15 participants, eight were international students. Following the group stage, the tournament continued in a knockout format. The final, which lasted for almost an hour, was eventually won by Levente Nagy against Elias Marsoubian (France) in a match full of twists and turns. A joint third place went to Tamás Mankovits and Máté Szabó.
Beyond the events linked to the #BeActive European Week of Sport, the traditional fall 3x3 intramural basketball championship also took place recently at the University of Debrecen. This tournament was won by the team “Béna fiatalok,” who defeated the Nigerian squad “Biscoff” in the final. “Heisenbergs” finished third, while “Hella” took the fourth place. The Final Four teams have once again set the bar high for future 3x3 challengers, though the latter will have to wait until February for a chance at a rematch for dethroning the reigning champions.
