Freshers’ Balls at the University

Spectacular decorations, video projection mapping, special ball themes, oaths taken and dances performed by freshers, election of ball queens, star performers - the series of freshers’ balls is now starting.

First-year students are preparing for one of the most important social events of their time at the university. In November and December, still before the start of the examination period, the Student Government of the University of Debrecen and of the individual faculties will organise six freshers’ balls at four locations over the course of four weeks.

As customary, the season will be kicked off by the Students’ Ball of the Faculty of Law, held on 12 November, Saturday, in Lovarda. Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, the Students’ Ball will feature the oath-taking ceremony and opening dance of first-year law students and the ceremonious pinning of ribbons for graduating students. The Medical Students’ Ball will be held in the Main Building, with more than 1000 participants, jointly organized by the Student Governments of the Faculties of General Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Public Health. At this year’s ball, also to be held on 12 November, the world of Walt Disney will come to life not only in the interior decoration and lighting of the building, but also in the special video mapping projected onto the façade of the Main Building.

The Faculty of Health will hold its freshers’ ball on 18 November, in the Zilahi Room in Nyíregyháza, where in addition to the ceremonious oath of freshers, they will also elect the king and the queen of the ball. The Faculty of Childcare and Adult Education will organize a ball for its first-year students in Hajdú Hotel and Events Hall, in Hajdúböszörmény. The decoration of the ball, to be held on 25 November, will be based on the theme of “Once upon a time.”

The Student Governments of the Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Engineering, and Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and Environmental Management chose the Main Building of the university as the venue for their traditional freshers’ ball. First-year students are preparing with two large-scale productions for the event to be held on 26 November. In addition to a waltz, they will also perform a folk dance as the freshers’ dance.

Traditionally, it is the ball of the Faculties of Arts and Humanities, Information Technology, Science and Technology, and Music that completes the series of freshers’ balls, held this year on 3 December. Nearly 2000 participants are expected to come to this event in the Main Building. The organizers are planning to recreate the world of 1920s variety shows this year.

“The freshers’ ball is an important milestone in student life, and this is also felt by first-year students themselves. There has been tremendous interest since the beginning of the semester. There were many more interested in participating in the opening dances than could be accommodated, showing that the freshers’ community is very active at the University of Debrecen. Everything goes smoothly in organizing the events, and we hope that this year, once again, we will stage very successful freshers’ balls, as expected,” István Ádám Bognár, president of the Student Government of the University of Debrecen (DEHÖK) says.

The events at the balls, in addition to the taking of the oaths, will include the election of kings, queens, princes and princesses of the ball, ceremonious speeches by university, faculty and student leaders, as well as several surprises. The list of star guests and bands in charge of creating a splendid atmosphere is already available on the Facebook page of DEHÖK.
