Jim Cahill, Mayor of the American sister city of New Brunswick, led a delegation which arrived at the University of Debrecen on September 26, to be received by academic vice-rector, László Csernoch.
New Brunswick is home to one of America's oldest and most influential academic centers, the Rutgers State University of New Jersey, founded in 1766. The University of Debrecen has been linked to the institution since 2005, and has subsequently several times renewed the initial inter-university agreement it signed then.
In the 2015/16 academic year, 51 American students studied at the University of Debrecen. Foreign students can very easily find courses here, and this may also be a reason why this year the student exchange program saw a record number of nearly 180 foreign students coming to the institution.
- The nearly 50 English language courses, a uniquely high number among European universities, make the university even more attractive to US students. Students arrive from the US during any semester, and can easily integrate into the courses running here - highlighted Csernoch László, who spoke in detail about the university's diverse educational offer.
The American visitors were particularly interested in the medical course, which also has a long history at Rutgers University; there are two first-rate university hospitals there as well.
The aim of the visit – in addition to strengthening the twinning relationship between the two cities – was to develop mutual co-operation between the two universities through which every year more and more students can come from overseas. The meeting also discussed whether in the future, thanks to the twin city relationship, students of the University of Debrecen might enjoy free tuition at the Rutgers Campus within the framework of the Campus Mundi or through the Erasmus+ scheme.
