QS Rankings – UD Still among the Global Elite

The University of Debrecen appears among the best 700 higher education institutions in the most recent Quacquarelli Symonds global rankings. UD has improved in the categories of academic reputation and international faculty, and has maintained its 2nd place among Hungarian universities.

The London-based Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) has been compiling the global rankings of universities since 2004. In order to create the QS World University Rankings 2023, which was published on Wednesday, QS had assessed 2,462 higher education institutions, out of which 1,422 were ranked and 124 were new entrants in the rankings. UD has been ranked in the 651- 700th range, which means it is among the best 46% of the ranked universities.

- Just like in previous years, we performed well in the category of international student index, which is reflected in our 161th place. Further, UD has moved up  in the categories of academic reputation and international faculty index. Based on the rankings we can identify the areas where we need to improve our performance. Scientific activities are covered by especially important indicators. In this regard, we need to increase the number of recognised publications and the number of citations – explained Ákos Pintér, rector’s commissioner for rankings to hirek.unideb.hu.

The experts of QS compile rankings based on six indicators: academic reputation (40 %), faculty/student ratio (20 %), employer reputation (10 %), citation per faculty (20 %), international faculty index (5%) and international student index (5%).

According to the 2023 ranking, the best universities are Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT, US), the University of Cambridge (UK) and Stanford University (US). Hungary is represented by the University of Debrecen, the University of Szeged, Eötvös Loránd University, the University of Pécs, the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Széchenyi István University, Corvinus University Budapest, the University of Miskolc,  Pannon University and Óbuda University in the rankings.
