A professor from the University of Hamburg is the latest honorary doctor of UD

In keeping with tradition, Jürgen Sarnowsky, the newly inaugurated honorary doctor of the University of Debrecen (UD), presented his scholarly work and his most recent research findings in the form of a lecture. The professor of history at the University of Hamburg was awarded the title of Doctor honoris causa during a ceremony held in the venue called Aula of the Main Building on Friday.

Professor Jürgen Sarnowsky is one of the most widely and internationally renowned scholars and lecturers in medieval history. His academic work covers almost all aspects of the Middle Ages. His research focus covers mainly the history of science and economics, but also the history of several major geographical areas, including England, the Baltic Sea, Prussia, the Baltic and the various regions of the Mediterranean world, especially the Eastern Mediterranean.

His professional contacts cover almost all the world, and the University of Debrecen plays a prominent part in this broad and widely recognized international academic network.

“On several occasions, Professor Sarnowsky has participated as a lecturer and section chair in conferences held and organized here, he has contributed to editing English and German-language collections and publications, and has been involved in the training program of doctoral students. In addition, he is also engaged in international accreditation activities, thanks to which he can provide us with useful advice in order to help us move forward in a variety of rankings,” said László Pósán to hirek.unideb.hu.

As the nominator for the honorary doctorate title, Dr. Pósán, a professor of the Institute of History of the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Debrecen, emphasized that the activities of Professor Jürgen Sarnowsky and his reception of this honorary doctorate would contribute to strengthening the international recognition and prestige of the University of Debrecen.

Before his reception of the title Doctor honoris causa, Professor Sarnowsky presented a slice of one of the main research topics in his oeuvre in a traditional academic lecture entitled Die Ereignissen auf Rhodos vor der Belagerung von 1522 [The events on Rhodes before the siege of 1522], organized by the Institute of History of the Faculty of Humanities of UD and the research group HUN-REN-DE Középkori Magyarország és Közép-Európa Hadtörténete Kutatócsoport on the Military History of Medieval Hungary and Central Europe, in the framework of the Medieval Military History Lecture Series in Karácsony Sándor Hall of the Main Building.

The professor described the events in the years before the Turkish conquest of Rhodes, which at the time was a Christian bastion of the Order of Saint John on the eastern Mediterranean coast of Anatolia. A remarkable aspect of the lecture was that the choice of the theme had several aspects that were also related to the history of Hungary from an international perspective, since it was during this period that the Turks occupied Nándorfehárvár (today: Belgrade) in Hungary, which was the beginning of a sad period in Hungarian history, followed by the Battle of Mohács with a rather tragic end result in 1526.

Our Institute of History will soon publish the lecture of the latest honorary doctor in the form of a hard copy of a study, which will be made available to teachers and students alike.
