New academicians inducted at the University of Debrecen

New academicians were elected and announced at the 199th General Assembly of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA). Five professors of the University of Debrecen (UD) were elected to act as corresponding members, while four of the hitherto corresponding members became full members of the Academy.

It was on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, that the Assembly of Academicians elected and announced new full, corresponding, external and honorary members of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences from a joint list of 136 academic candidates.


Among the new academicians, i.e., the newly elected corresponding members, there are five professors from UD: József Szabadfalvi from the Faculty of Law, Andrea Szegedi from the Faculty of Medicine, Zoltán Barta, István Fábián and Szilárd Szabó from the Faculty of Science and Technology.

According to the Statutes of the Academy, Hungarian citizens who hold the title of Doctor of the Academy or an equivalent academic degree and who have been recognized as a scholar or scientist of a particularly high standard and creative approach may be elected to be corresponding members.

As regards full membership, Hungarian citizens who have made significant scholarly or scientific achievements since becoming corresponding members may be elected as full members.

Among the former corresponding members, Balázs Borsos, Attila Debreczeni and István Hoffmann of the Faculty of Humanities of UD were elected as full members of the Department of Linguistics and Literature, and Ferenc Kun, Professor of the Faculty of Science and Technology of UD, was elected as a full member of the Department of Physical Sciences.

As a result, the number of academicians at the University of Debrecen at present is 29.

Following the latest election and announcement process, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences currently has 294 full members, 71 corresponding members, 201 external members and 191 honorary members.
