Medical Education – The Symbol of Debrecen

The series of events celebrating the centenary of the education of medical doctors at UD began with a gala evening. Over the last one hundred years, 14,000 students obtained medical doctor degree at University Debrecen. At the event five major professors of the medical faculty was awarded.

- The anniversary provides an opportunity to look back and remember those whose hard work made the education of medical doctors at UD what it is today: a competitive and prestigious programme, even at the international stage – said József Tőzsér in his speech at the gala evening, which was held at the Csokonai Theatre on 25 September.

The vice rector for health industry innovation and education development pointed out that over the past hundred years 14,000 students have become medical doctors at UD.

The event called "Centenarium Medicinae" was the first of a series of programmes through which the Faculty of Medicine celebrates the 100th anniversary of medical education.

- Medical education at UD was provided in various organisational forms in the last 100 years and it had to deal with numerous challenges. However, it has always been able to adapt to the changing environment. This is why medical education at UD is popular and successful – said László Mátyus.

In his welcome speech, the dean talked about great teachers of the past, who equipped students not only with professional knowledge, but human values as well.

- For Debrecen, education is a strategic area with a hundred-year history, with medical education as one of the most important and symbolic representative of the educational traditions of the town. Foreign students who obtain their degrees at UD are ambassadors of Debrecen and spread its reputation – pointed out mayor László Papp in his speech.

At the gala evening medals and diplomas were awarded to professors who contributed to the success of medical education with their work throughout decades. The oldest teacher of the university, István Földes (94), as well as professors András Leövey, László Fésüs, László Muszbek and György Paragh were awarded with the "100 years of medical education at UD" award.
