Food Day – More Than a Gastrofest

An international culinary cavalcade where not only can you taste the world but you can also meet the multicultural community of UD – This is the International Food Day, which will be held at Egyetem Square on 3 May.

The University of Debrecen has the highest number of foreign students in Hungary: almost 6,000 young people from 113 countries. The International Food Day is the biggest and most popular university event of the International Student Union (ISU), which represents foreign students. The fact that, due to the huge number of teams willing to introduce their culinary art registration had to be closed well before the deadline demonstrates the popularity of Gastrofest, which will be organised for the 14th time this year.

- From a low-profile, outdoor cooking session it has turned into a large-scale festive event, which attracts many people, and where diversity brings students closer and helps us sustain the community we have forged at the university. This year again, the presentation of the dishes made by the teams of 22 nations will take place in front of the Main Building – explained Sayed-Ahmad Mohamed, vice president of DEHÖK for foreign students.

From 3 p.m., visitors can taste the cuisines of the following countries: Brazil, Cambodia, China, Egypt, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Jordan, Korea, Kurdistan, Mexico, Moldova, Niger, Pakistan, Palestine, South-Africa, Syria, Taiwan, Tunisia and Yemen. This year again, a portion  of the amount of the money paid by visitors for tasting tickets will be donated to the Foundation for the Children with Leukemia.
