Dutch Summer Course at the Faculty of Humanities

This summer the University of Debrecen will host the annual course of the Eastern and Central European and Dutch Inter-University Cooperation (COMENIUS), which will be organised for the second time after 2007 by the Department of Dutch Studies of the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Debrecen.

Besides the annual summer course, COMENIUS also holds an international conference every two years. Last time it was hosted by the University of Debrecen in 2022.

In addition to the COMENIUS countries – Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Croatia, Poland, Latvia, Hungary, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia –, this time the language course will be attended by Ukrainian participants as well. The 2-week programme will start on 2 July.
In Hungary only the University of Debrecen, Eötvös Lóránd University and Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church in Hungary offer Dutch language courses.

As an international organisation, COMENIUS supports the work of the teachers and students of 20 departments of Dutch studies in 11 countries.

– Owing to the support provided by the organisation, students of Dutch studies can improve their language skills and build contact networks, which, in the case of “small” languages like Dutch, is highly important, as it facilitates the development of international scientific and research projects that connect those studying Dutch language and culture in Central Europe – said Gábor Pusztai, head of the Department of Dutch Studies to hirek.unideb.hu.
While in Hungary, the participants will spend a week in Debrecen studying the Dutch language on a course consisting of 40 classes from native Dutch teachers and reviewers working at Hungarian universities.

In addition to studying Dutch, participants will also have time to explore the university and the city, including its colourful cultural and gastro offer. The programme will continue with a 1-week series of similar programmes in Budapest.
