Confucius Institute opens at University of Debrecen

Chinese language teaching and promotion of Chinese culture – these are the main goals of the Confucius Institute established at the UD. The institution was set up in a cultural and educational cooperation of UD and the Chinese Tianjin Foreign Language University, and it was opened on Friday.

- By the establishment of this institute a centre of Chinese science, culture, language, history and philosophy has been created at the Universty of Debrecen - stressed Zoltán Szilvássy rector in his address. He also mentioned that the university has already more than 50 cooperative deals with Chinese institutions, economic players and financial institutions.  China is one of the most important strategic target area of UD, and currently more than 300 Chinese students has been registered at the institution.

- The knowledge of Chinese language, the understanding of Chinese way of thinnking and close communication with Chinese colleagues are elementary interests of every European institution, hence ours as well. Moreover, we are in special position being at the meeting point of East and West – the rector added.

Conficius Institutes were established by the People’s Republic of China to promote and introduce Chinese language and culture, and to improve its cultural relations. More than 500 institutes are operative around the world, the institute in Debrecen is the fifth one in Hungary.

- University of Debrecen is an excellent venue for Confucius Institute  because of its excellent, high level education making it an attraction for Chinese students. The goal is to learn from each other, and Confucius Institute is a great platform for that. The insitute can also help the development of relations between the two countries – said Duan Jielong, Chinese Ambassador for China in Hungary at the ceremony.

The primary activity of the institute is the teaching of Chinese language and the mediation and promotion of Chinese culture, and also the organization of cultural events, performances, film screening and event in relation to Chinese festivities.  The teaching began this September. About 40 students has registered, and we have not only university students, but also students and teachers of other institutions.


- Language teacing is provided by native Chinese speakers. There are groups from beginner to advanced level. Besides teaching, we offer courses on civilization, Chinese characters, Chinese cultural and art works – said Péter Csatár senior lecturer of Faculty of Arts, Hungarian director of the institute.

The institute in Debrecenen was set up in a cooperation of the University of Debrecen and Tianjin Foreign Language University, it is located on the top floor of the Main Building in Egyetem Square.  For the website of the University of Debrecen Confucius click on the link konfuciusz.unideb.hu.

At the opening ceremony of the Confucius Institute Zoltán Szilvássy, rector presented a diploma of titular professor to Dr Chen Zhen, doctor-pharmacist.
