With more participants than ever before, the most recent Food Day featured dishes could be tried from as many as twenty-four different nations. The international student community of the University of Debrecen hosted their traditional gastronomical festival for the sixteenth time this year, which again served a charitable purpose.

The University of Debrecen and GE HealthCare have concluded and signed a research and development agreement to support radiotherapy treatment. The Department of Oncoradiology is the first institution in Europe to test the GE HealthCare software that constitutes a system of highly complex radiation therapy procedures. As for now, the application is only used in a testing environment but, once it gets involved in patient care, it will be able to provide more effective oncoradiology treatments.

His Excellency Mr. Ali Hadi Hameed Al-Bayati, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Iraq to Hungary, has discussed issues including the increasing the number of Iraqi students enrolled at the University of Debrecen and the opportunities for cooperation in research and development with Rector Zoltán Szilvássy. During his official visit, Ali Hadi Hameed Al-Bayati also met Iraqi students at our university.

The University of Debrecen (UD) is intent on putting the study of biodiversity, climate change, sustainable development and water management on a new footing. As it was announced at a press conference on the subject, the unit called Biodiversity, Water Management and Climate Change Coordination Research Centre, which was established last year, would play a key strategic part in this process.

Abdukodir Toshkulov, the Minister in charge of higher education of Uzbekistan and Szilvássy Zoltán, rector performed negotiations on Saturday about the educational, research and innovation cooperation with the University of Debrecen. The Minister asked the University to take part in the work of the emerging Uzbek scientific and technological cluster.

Mr. Hamane Niang, president of the International Basketball Association, visited the University of Debrecen on Thursday. The sports diplomat praised the sports life of the university and the coordinated system of medicine, sports and research.

The Ministry of Technology and Industry is strengthening its cooperation with the University of Debrecen in areas of strategic importance for the country. The focus of the long-term agreement signed on Thursday is the health industry, the vehicle and energy industries.

The University of Debrecen has joined the position of the National Research, Development and Innovation Office (NRDIO) on Open Science. The Certificate of Participation was handed over to rector Zoltán Szilvássy by István Szabó, vice president of NRDIO on Wednesday.

During his visit on Wednesday, Saud Alshamsi, the Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to Hungary, discussed opportunities for cooperation in the fields of education, research and innovation at the University of Debrecen with Rector Zoltán Szilvássy. Among other things, they also touched upon the corporate ecosystem surrounding the institution and the UAE's economic development efforts.

The University of Debrecen is further strengthening its cooperation based on knowledge transfer with Uzbekistan. Rector Zoltán Szilvássy, held talks with Ambassador Abat Fayzullaev on education and R&D cooperation in the fields of pharmaceutical science and industry, as well as agricultural science.

This year the Debrecen Award for Molecular Medicine went to Katalin Karikó. The Hungarian Széchenyi laureate research biologist, who patented the synthetic mRNS-based vaccine technology, received the prize at a ceremony held at the University of Debrecen on Tuesday. She also gave a presentation to the audience.

At its meeting held on 9 December 2021, the Senate of the University of Debrecen made a decision regarding the preferred candidate for the position of Rector. The Senate recommended the appointment of Zoltán Szilvássy as Rector by the Board of Trustees of the foundation maintaining the university. The Senate also made decisions about the launch of new courses, business partnerships, and the amendment of several regulations.

Further measures will be introduced at the University of Debrecen as of Tuesday Nov2, to slow the spread of the corona virus. In addition to wearing masks and disinfecting hands, university staff are asked by the university leadership to hold their meetings online when possible.

The leaders of the University of Debrecen met with the delegation of three higher education institutions in Uzbekistan to discuss the experiences of pharmaceutical and agricultural education in Debrecen and the establishment of a Hungarian-Uzbek joint degree programme in these fields.

An agreement of cooperation has been signed by the UD and the organization called Debrecen Business Service Centers Roundtable, which coordinates the companies that provide business services in our city.

The University of Debrecen concluded an agreement with the Uzbek government on the introduction of educational programmes in pharmacy in Uzbekistan, as well as on the promotion of joint educational, research, development, and programmes.

The UD has concluded an agreement with Tomsk Polytechnic University, Russia’s leading technical university – with a view to the pandemic situation, in the framework of an online meeting. The education and research cooperation will also encompass the areas of research and development.

Andreas Zagkiis, general secretary of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has visited the University of Debrecen. He came to see the 3x3 basketball Youth Festival and the World Tour in Debrecen. Mr. Zagkiis was welcomed by rector Zoltán Szilvássy and chancellor Zoltán Bács.

The Innovation Centre and the Vaccine Pilot Plant will be the first university facilities in the Science Park of the University of Debrecen. The cornerstones of the buildings were laid on Tuesday in the presence of László Palkovics, minister of innovation and technology.

On Thursday, rector Zoltán Szilvássy and a Chinese representative talked about the most recent technologies in the construction industry, and potential partnership in the fields of health industry and medicine. The subject of a vaccine against the corona virus also came up at the meeting.

The Ministry of Innovation and Technology of Hungary has hosted an online scientific conference on the current status of R&D related to the protection from the spread of COVID-19. At the conference, Rector Zoltán Szilvássy gave a presentation on the developments currently underway at the UD.

Supported by the Ministry of Human Resources (EMMI), the University of Debrecen (UD) and the National Public Health Centre have agreed to promote creation of up-to-date vaccine production in Hungary. The agreement was signed in the Ministry on Friday.

With its 44th position in the Good Health and Wellbeing category the University of Debrecen has ranked the best Hungarian university, also ranking among the best among the world’s universities in three other categories on the most recent list of Times Higher Education (THE).

GE Reports has recently published an account of the European application of a special methodology developed by the world-famous Massachusetts Institute of Technology and called Catalyst, as well as of the role of the University of Debrecen and GE Healthcare in the relevant program.
