End-of-the-Extraordinary-Academic-Year Wrap-Up

2020. August 03. - 11:17 Graduates from the US received their diplomas in the rather unusual venue of Nagyerdei Stadion on the first two Saturdays of July. At the second installment of the extraordinary graduation ceremony, graduates from as many as nine faculties could toss their graduation caps into the air.

In his address, Ákos Pintér, General Vice Rector of the University of Debrecen, noted that the diplomas and the corresponding degrees earned this time represented the outcome of an extraordinary and historic time and age.

“The University of Debrecen could almost instantly react and respond to the critical situation caused by the pandemic. Switching to digital education and to the distance-learning mode was indeed exemplary,” said the Vice Rector, who also expressed his gratitude to the students and to the faculty of the University of Debrecen for their work and endurance during the extraordinary months in the past semester.

Due to the pandemic hazard, the traditional graduation ceremonies could not be held at the end of the past academic year. Therefore, the graduates from the fourteen faculties of the University of Debrecen received their diplomas in the framework of an unorthodox institutional ceremony on the arena floor of Nagyerdei Stadion.

On July 11, there were about 1,300 graduates participating in the ceremony from the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Health, the Faculty of Dentistry, the Faculty of Pharmacy, the Faculty of Informatics, the Faculty of Child and Adult Education, the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Public Health. There were also several thousand friends and relatives present on the grandstands, watching as two students, one form the Hungarian-language program and another one from the English-language program, on behalf of each faculty came forward for a symbolic reception of everybody else’s diplomas.

At the two events held by the University of Debrecen, a total of 2,500 graduates from fourteen faculties bade farewell to their university years “on the turf.” Together with their friends and relatives invited, there was an almost 20,000-strong crowd celebrating in Nagyerdei Stadion on July 4 and 11.
